During my first three days at UH/Case, I got to observe several different areas of medial practice. Thursday, I spent the second half of the day with Dr. Otteson in Pediatric ENT. Although there were no surgeries for me to watch that day, I did have the privilege to be in all of his appointments for the day. Being in pediatrics was something different and unexpected for me because I was more interested in watching surgery but I found that I enjoyed dealing with children and discussing the issues at hand just as much as watching the action happen. Friday was the big day where I got to spend 6+ hours watching pediatric ENT surgery with Dr. Arnold. In one day I got to see two myringotomy's, one nasal cauterization, one tonsillectomy combined with an adenoidectomy and then a removal of a thyroid nodule. Somehow I managed to survive all of the standing and fast paced walking (which I loved) and focused on the feeling of being in the operating room throughout the day. The varying humidity and temperature, clanging of metal tools, buzzing of the bovie pen, sound of the level machine, clicking of the anesthetic nobs and the feeling of being two feet away of the patient is completely amazing and an experience I will never forget.
The only downside of working in a hospital is that the schedule is never set. Patients cancel or show up late and you're stuck sitting for half an hour (which is a pleasant gift because you're standing all day). Being in a surgical situation also raises the stress level to extreme levels especially when you're dealing with very young children. But overall, I'm very excited about what I've done already and I'm even more thrilled for the next few weeks.
